I wouldn’t normally include a photo of an umpire, but that is no ordinary umpire. The man making the signal is none other than David Ivon Gower, scorer of over 11,000 of the most elegant international runs you could ever hope to see.
He was officiating here in a charity game at Hawridge and Cholesbury Cricket Club. They say never meet your heroes, but I had a chat with him in the tea break and he was great. We chatted about the 1986/87 Ashes series, as some highlights were on BT Sport at the time. Hawridge and Cholesbury is located in the Chiltern Hills near Tring. Not sure if it’s in Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire, but no doubt someone will clear that up.
